Statement

"Étienne Saint-Denis’s practice blends nostalgia and opportunity to create images that are both ethereal and evocative.  His diverse portfolio exudes an undercurrent of unresolved tension, instilling a haunting sense of déjà vu that unites his work. Drawn to subjects that ignite a feeling of predestination, Saint -Denis focuses on moments that seem to have been previously captured by his lens, existing within the fabric of space and time.  With a vivid vision in mind, he embarks on a journey to actualize it.

In his creative process, Saint-Denis reimagines traditional storytelling by deconstructing narratives and inviting viewers to assemble stories based on their emotional responses to his work.  This intimate collaboration between artist and audience enriches the narrative, fostering a lasting bond that transcends visual barriers.  In his artistic world, the photographer’s world is shaped not by rules, but by the shared emotional experience emerging from their art. Saint-Denis finds satisfaction when his audience connects with the subtle, indescribable elements he thoughtfully incorporates into his compositions.

For Étienne, image-making provides a wide array of creative opportunities.  He values reflecting on technical aspects, and craftmanship in his practice. Driven by the desire to achieve an ideal based on his own set of codes and rules that contribute to his signature style, he continually refines his craft, questioning the boundaries of visual storytelling for those who encounter his work."
